Gonzales Met with Impromptu Protests at Harvard Law
By Amit Agarwal

As U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales posed for photographs with fellow members of the Harvard Law class of 1982, he was heckled by a group of students, including one wearing a black hood and an orange jumpsuit.

Although Gonzales had appeared unannounced, word of his arrival had spread fast. When the photographer said "cheese," students shouted that it would be more appropriate for him to say "torture," "resign," or "I don’t recall."

After the photo session, the attorney general is reported to have entered the library and slipped out through an underground emergency exit.

Gonzales is currently facing an investigation into the firing of eight U.S. attorneys in 2006. According to allegations, the White House has been interfering in federal law enforcement. This has also resulted in widespread calls for Gonzales’ resignation. Democrats say the attorney misrepresented his role in firing the federal prosecutors and that his move was politically motivated.According to the Bush administration, the firings were routine personnel matters and were based on poor performance. Several fired prosecutors said that, on the contrary, they had been pressured to shift their focus to voter-fraud investigations.

During a recent cross-examination by the Senate Judiciary Committee, Gonzales conceded that the firings were handled poorly but insisted that the decisions were correct and not meant to impart political benefits. Investigation has revealed that according to Gonzales’ schedule, he attended an hour-long meeting on November 27, during which he consented to a detailed plan for the prosecutors’ firings. Gonzales denies having seen any memos about any such plans.Although the attorney general maintains that he was limitedly involved in the firings, a number of internal emails tell a different tale. The emails prove that the White House was far more involved in the firings than it has acknowledged.

However, the most baffling part is that while Gonzales was being questioned, he seemed to suffer from memory loss. He couldn’t recall a number of events, some of which took place just a few months back. When repeatedly questioned as to why the eight attorneys were fired, Gonzales could not remember anything specific. Democratic and Republican members of the Judiciary Committee together shook their heads in disbelief.
