McManis Publishes Book on Biodiversity
Amy E. Wong

Professor Charles McManis has just published a book of compelling essays entitled, “Biodiversity and the Law: Intellectual Property, Biotechnology & Traditional Knowledge.”  The essays explore ways in which we can preserve local biological and cultural diversity while promoting global economic development. Contributors to the book include 30 international experts in the fields of law, biology, and social sciences.

McManis, professor of law at Washington University of St. Louis, said, “The book examines the aftermath of three major treatises: The Convention on Biological Diversity, the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, and the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

“It analyzes examples of ‘global thinking’ about the protection of traditional knowledge and presents vignettes of how intellectual property mechanisms can be used to protect biodiversity locally.”

Already, the book has received much praise from the legal community.  Michael Blakeney, professor of law at the University of London said, “This book provides a detailed examination of the contemporary debate on how to reconcile global economic development with the preservation of our biological and cultural diversity. This debate brings into tension human rights with intellectual property and industrial development with food security.”

Indeed, countries are growing rapidly, but they must do so carefully.  Cheap resources and convenient measures often hurt us on the long run.  We must abandon old technology and nonrenewable resources that pollute our environment and hurt our posterity.  We must invest ourselves in researching and promoting green technology.  This is where true power, growth, and preservation are found.

This collection of essays seems like an interesting read, a perfect reference book for legal practitioners, policy makers, and scientists.
