Environment symposium at Golden Gate Law School
By Gitanjali Hazarika

The Golden Gate University School of Law is organizing a one-day environment symposium to examine the implications of global warming for toxins containment at Bay Area landfills. The daylong free symposium to be held on June 2 titled "Global Warning: Toxins @ Bay," is sponsored by the Citizens' League for Environmental Action Now (CLEAN). The School of Law's Environmental Law and Justice Clinic will cosponsor the symposium.

The discussion at the symposium will be about health and safety issues of people staying around the San Francisco Bay Area. The speakers at the symposium representing community and environmental groups, research institutions, and governmental agencies will discuss whether these communities can continue with the current practice of leaving toxins at landfills and other waste sites. The participants will also discuss if these residents need to take a "more decisive action to see that toxins are safely removed" in view of the "anticipated rising of sea levels and increased flooding triggered by global warming."

"This is not a 'change-your-lightbulbs global warming symposium…"  The Bay Area residents will learn a lot about these risks, from the discussions, says Dana Dillworth, the director of CLEAN.  Dillworth adds that the "Community members will ask for innovative, effective, and natural solutions so that we don’t pass this problem on to future generations."

The symposium will be addressed among others by Guido Franco of the California Climate Change Research Center; Joshua Collins of the San Francisco Estuary Institute; Jane Williams of California Communities Against Toxics; Michael Warburton of the Public Trust Alliance; and remediation specialists from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  Apart from the sponsors, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Clean Water Action, California Communities Against Toxics, Brisbane Baylands Community Advisory Group, and San Bruno Mountain Watch are providing the symposium with additional support.
