Wake Forest students to get lessons on e-etiquette
By Gitanjali Hazarika

With the rise in e-population, e-schooling on 'e-very' topic seems unavoidable now. Bloggers, webbers, and what have you have conquered e-world and also developed their e-colonies. Not convinced? What’s the Facebook, Orkut, et al linkages called?  They are virtual colonies of e-residents, sharing, caring, and deriving from their e-pals and e-kins in an e-lingo, wild, wacky, and often disrespectful. But in all, these netizens also need to know that virtual world demands the e-world to also have some manners, which have to be maintained at all levels.

Recently, two Drake University professors — Melissa Weresh and Lisa Penland — designed a 50-minute workshop — "Professionalism in Virtual Communication" — that focused on student e-mails, Web profiles, etc. Forced by inapt mails that students often write, the profiles that they put up on sites, and comments that they write on the e-pages leave a lot to be said about the "Google generations" e-etiquette. The duo this time drilled into the participants few "principles of professionalism in virtual communication."

Law professors from nine law schools in North Carolina and South Carolina at Wake Forest's law school present in the workshop shared the duos efforts. The germ of holding such a workshop stemmed from an Iowa judge's revelations of comments made by some Drake students online. The judge was scouting for a good college for his daughter and hence stumbled on the Drake students' odd humor in the Facebook groups.

Names like "Law Drinking Society" and "Law Student Pornography Club" didn't go down well with the duo, who were also aghast to see strong views and insults posted by their students about the faculty. One student also posted a death wish on Penland!  However, the two did not get bogged by the comments, nor wanted the system to take punitive measures on these errant students. But they were unanimous that the Law School administration needed to take some corrective steps. "I want students to be more thoughtful and deliberate," said Weresh, who then was determined to change the students' mindset. Both persuaded Drake's administration to support their efforts to educate students about online etiquette.

"Generation Google has a short attention span because they spend all their time online," Weresh said, adding "I want students to be more thoughtful and deliberate…to survive professionally." The two are confident that the online mistakes can be redeemed so as to "start making a commitment to a well-led life."
