Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the drama surrounding Ellen DeGeneres and her former pooch, Iggy. DeGeneres originally adopted the dog from Mutts and Moms, a nonprofit dog-rescue organization in Pasadena, CA. After DeGeneres adopted Iggy, she found that the dog was not getting along with her cats. She then gave Iggy to her hairdresser’s family. When Mutts and Moms called DeGeneres to check up on the dog, she told them the truth about the situation. Once the organization found out that DeGeneres had given up the dog, they went to her hairdresser’s house and took Iggy away. The adoption contract allegedly stated that if DeGeneres couldn’t keep the dog, it had to go back to the agency. The organization refuses to return the dog to the family, and as a result, they have been receiving death threats after DeGeneres’s emotional plea on air during her daytime talk show. After days of media hoopla, DeGeneres is asking for calm and has asked her fans not to resort to violence. This whole chaotic situation seems to have been blown way out of proportion. I think all parties involved are in the wrong; however, I must side with DeGeneres on this one. The organization seems to have a spiteful reason for keeping Iggy and wanting to transfer the dog to a different home. The woman in charge of the agency has shown up on various TV shows to discuss her side of the story. She has told television viewers she was frightened for her life and has appeared holding a dog while crying her way into a not-so-believable story of sadness. People are upset at her and rightfully so, but I must admit that death threats are definitely overboard. Instead of making threats and resorting to violence, people need to write to the organization directly or contact local officials who can use their public voices to make a difference. This started out as an unfair matter, but now it is taking a crazy dangerous turn. Hopefully it will be resolved with the right goal in mind: finding a safe and loving home for Iggy.
