New law graduates and realistic salaries

The National Association for Law Placement (NALP) last week released a released a report in which it emphasized once again the difference between the starting average salary and the salary amount that most new graduates get paid. It noted that the average goes up because some firms do offer $160,000 per year to their new employees, but several of them pay in the range of $40,000 to $50,000. There is plenty of evidence that most law jobs do not pay in six figures, at least when straight out of school. A quick web search for law jobs requiring no experience will show that most jobs top out at $60,000. For example, a Deputy District Attorney position in California’s Merced County pays almost $60,000 per year with decent health benefits and seemingly secure employment; remember California’s high deficits and constant political infighting over how to balance the budget.
Law students who have gotten in debt to the tune of 150K may not like the idea of earning only $50,000 a year, but in this economy even these jobs are hard to come back and rejecting them may mean giving up working in the legal field for a long time.
