Find a Mentor

We’ve all been warned of the limits of book study, and no matter how apt you are at turning school knowledge into work power, there will be bumps. The commonly repeated advice is true. Sometimes you can read an entire book, but all you need is the voice of experience telling you that one sentence to make it all snap into place. Look into getting a mentor. Get a mentor, and don’t wait until after graduation. Start looking around, asking around.
Who to look for in a mentor? It does not have to be the man or woman with the highest status or loftiest paycheck, but it should be somebody you can respect and somebody you would want to be like, both professionally and personally. If you respect your mentor, you will want to take his advice, and won’t mind any criticism you receive.
During a career, starting as a junior attorney and continuing as long as you care to, you can have multiple mentors. Like seeing a psychologist or dating, you want to get a sense early on if this is a person you want to work with. If it doesn’t work, then feel free to politely leave the relationship.
A mentor can ask those hard-knock questions you can’t answer by reviewing your notes. In fact, a mentor can give you something you can only get from the voice of experience: that there is a solution and that you can find it. That confidence, that touch of human contact, having somebody who’s got your back, is irreplaceable and effective for everything lawyers do, to asking technical questions about procedure to some feedback on your progress, to advice on what to do next in your career.
Take the time, therefore, and invest some effort into finding and maintaining a relationship with a mentor, or maybe even a few over the years. The joy of having a more mature and experienced friend in the profession is rewarding in and of itself.
