We all get anxious at times, we all get depressed; some are more prone to this than others, but nobody escapes it in the long run. Meanwhile, we are in law school, we've done a lot to be here, paid a lot to be here: what sort of career are we building for ourselves if instead of making a favorable impression on professors and potential contacts, we are just muddled and sullen and can barely get through our studies? How to handle a slump?
First of all, you must assess the degree of your depression. If you are majorly depressed, it might help you to get counseling or take an antidepressant. Though some people think there is a stigma taking such medication, others find it liberating, and didn't realize what they were capable of without the anchor of a depression, a chemical imbalance, holding them down.
But assuming that your case isn't clinical, but nevertheless, you find it discouraging, there are a few things you can do to ease through a slump.
First of all, you need to have compassion and let yourself have lower expectations temporarily. If you are used to a vigorous study program, or doing a high output of exceptional work, admit to yourself that it is unfair to expect as much of yourself when you are in a slump. Set a limit of what you think is a reasonable expectation, something you really can and will do, now that you have less energy, and feel proud you did it. When feeling discouraged or demoralized, it is unfair to expect your best.
Secondly, intermix, if you can, something that will perk you up. A favorite book, a favorite author, or a favorite television show can be a good change of pace. Calling up a friend or sibling might also add perspective. Sometimes these depressions are the body’s way of digesting, or alternatively a sort of "spiritual molting" by which you get past some old issues and prepare yourself for the new.
Be kind to yourself, even though the inner coach is rooting you to do your best and never fail. Also have a mother's voice when you talk to yourself, that if emotionally unwell, it's okay to get well again. Discouragement happens to everybody; the winners are those who persist.
