Going to law school can be a daunting task for students, especially if they don't know anyone at the school. We have compiled a list of tips that first-year law students can put into action in order to be successful while in school.

Write in your Books

You purchased your law textbooks, and more than likely you will not be re-selling them, so make sure you write in them. Use note cards and sticky notes to mark pages in them as well. When the professors says something of importance about a case you are studying, write it down in the margins of your textbook. Do not be afraid to take notes in your text, it will help when it comes time to make an outline, study, or find information you are trying to recall.

Make Outlines Often

It is very important for you to make outlines as often as possible. Outlines will help you study cases and other important information for all of your tests. It is best to make the outlines yourself and not just get them from someone else. The whole point of making the outline is to learn the material while making it. Even if you are involved in a study group, it is best to make the outline yourself so you can put yourself ahead of the game.

Take the Right Notes

Most law school classes are question-and-answer sessions. Because of this, many of the answers you will hear in class will be wrong. The reason for this is that the professors will be doing the questioning and the students will be answering the questions. Before you take notes, try to determine which answers are wrong so you are not taking incorrect notes. This will cut down on your study time and help you learn the correct material.

Study Groups can be Overrated

Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to join a study group while in law school. As good as a study group can be, it can also be detrimental to your education. The reasons for this include members of the group liking to chat during meetings and the fact that they can take up too much of your time. Studying alone is not wrong and it benefits plenty of students. And, most of the time, people will say the wrong thing in a study group just to try and impress others.

Stay Up-to-Date on Reading Assignments

Make sure you stay up-to-date on your reading assignments. If you fall behind on reading in law school, you could get yourself into some major trouble. You will be called on by the professor, so make sure you have read all of the required assignments prior to class.
