University of Georgia School of Law Names Peter Rutledge New Dean

The University of Georgia School of Law has announced its new dean, according to The Red & Black. Beginning on January 1, Herman E. Talmadge Chair of Law, Peter B. "Bo" Rutledge, will take the reigns of the position.
He is also serving as the associate dean for faculty development at the school right now.
Rutledge will take over for Rebecca White, who was the dean from 2003 until May of this year. She announced this past May that she wanted to return to a faculty position at the law school.
“I was able to attend all of the dean candidate presentations and had meetings with the dean candidates with a group of students, and we all could not be more excited for Professor Rutledge to become dean of the law school,” said Student Bar Association President Carey Miller.
“I am most excited about the energy and enthusiasm that infuses things here both at the law school and the University,” he said. “The University is under great leadership and the law school is in a good place; our faculty are excited to be here.”
Rutledge said that he wants to focus on three issues if selected as dean when he was at a public presentation as a finalist for the position.
Rutledge noted that he wanted to continue building and strengthening the law reputation of the law school, ensure that the school retains its already strong return on investment quality and keep the characteristics in the future.
“My first goal as the dean is to continue to build on the tremendous record that my predecessor Rebecca White has made for the school and to work closely with the [alumni], faculty, staff and administration to continue to make this one of the best law schools in the country,” Rutledge said.
Rutledge is a graduate of both the Harvard and University of Chicago law schools. He has clerked for U.S. Justice Clarence Thomas, briefed the Supreme Court and testified in front of Congress during his career.
Rutledge joined the UGA law faculty in 2008 and teaches international litigation and arbitration, civil procedure and international business transactions.
“Legal education is at a crossroads; it is at a point where it is changing and that is a challenge for a dean at any law school,” Miller said. “We feel Professor Rutledge is well-equipped to handle that at Georgia Law and feel he will do an excellent job.”
