Pepperdine University School of Law Hosted a Conference on Diversity in the Legal Profession

The Institute on Law, Religion, and Ethics hosted a conference at Pepperdine
University on Feb. 24 to discuss the lack of racial and ethnic diversity in law
schools and the legal profession.
In the famously diverse state of
California, 1.7% of all lawyers are African-American, 3.8% are Latino, and 5.3%
are Asian. The vast majority of lawyers are white
males.
Problems with racial
diversity aren’t new and have been well-documented and thoroughly
studied. In Dec. 2006, Law.com released an article entitled “Competition Has Law Firms Digging Deeper on Campus,” which
explores how recruiters look at lower-tier law schools in order to meet higher
diversity standards.
Shortly before that, in Nov. 2006, The New
York Times featured an article, “Lawyers Debate Why Blacks Lag
at Major Firms,” in which
UCLA law professor Richard H. Sander asserts that blacks rarely make partner
since many are under the impression that they are hired based on lower
standards.
This topic continues to be the center of a hot
debate and activism. In order to rectify this dangerous trend, it
is important to pinpoint the different roots of this persisting problem, slowly
whittle away at this old foundation, and build anew. Most obvious,
of course, are the socioeconomic factors that plague minorities.
Many face different challenges and are not privy to many
opportunities. A not-so-obvious factor that Pepperdine University
discussed in its conference pertains to the resources of the Christian
faith.

“Within the United States, African-Americans, Hispanics, and
Asians are among the most actively involved Christians. Many of
the greatest leaders in the ongoing fight for equality—including Martin Luther
King, Jr., and Cesar Chavez—drew guidance, strength, and inspiration from the
Christian faith.”
I had never thought about that:
religion uniting a group of individuals and providing them with
the endurance and support they need to overcome societal challenges.
It is true that many social movements have been initiated by leaders of
faith. I am not particularly religious, but it is undeniable that
there are many in this country who are.
There are many, religious and not,
who can lead people to self-empowerment. Frankly, it would be nice
to see a revived social movement that stirs me anew. Is it
possible to gather momentum for something like this in our current disparate and
PC-sensitive society?
