After interviewing with 16 firms, a law student only got calls from four. Eventually, she was rejected by all 16.  This sounds like a run-of-the-mill story, right? Well, it’s not.  What makes this surprising is that the student denied all of these jobs had graduated from Yale Law School, contributed to top law journals, and completed internships with leading firms.  The news becomes more stunning when one discovers that the reason for her rejection was not her academic performance but derogatory commentary about her that appeared on a popular message board.  The student, who preferred to remain anonymous, fearing backlash, was threatened with physical and sexual violation by someone whose identity remains unknown to her. The woman desperately emailed the site administrators, urging them to remove the material, only to get a blank response. She also contacted Google, which claimed helplessness on its part, saying that its policy permits only the site administrator to remove material and clear search results. This case exemplifies the emergence of a new method for maligning others online.  The Yale Law graduate is not the solitary target, and AutoAdmit, the message board that contained the derogatory matter, is not the only forum for such discussions.  Admittedly, AutoAdmit is the largest message board, with 800,000 to 1 million unique visitors per month; shockingly, it is run by a third-year law student at the University of Pennsylvania. Slanderous statements can be stored on the site forever and can easily be accessed through a Google search.  Comments on the message board sometimes include objectionable photos taken from women’s Facebook pages.  There is reason for job applicants to be concerned, as employers, including law firms, frequently run Google searches before hiring candidates in hopes of steering clear of certain types of prospective employees.   The law-school board on AutoAdmit agrees that some of the messages included disparage individuals.  However, in a separate interview, AutoAdmit’s founder, Jarret Cohen, denied any intention to “selectively remove” offensive comments.  In a response to a victim’s email asking for help with the matter, University of Pennsylvania Law School’s associate dean, Gary Clinton, is reported to have written that there are few legal remedies institutions can implement with regard to such matters.
