UI Law Students Get a Glimpse of the Court in Action

It was an exciting experience for the 400 law students from the University of Iowa who had the opportunity to witness an actual hearing in court. Make no mistake; it wasn’t a routine moot court but, rather, an actual hearing with professional lawyers arguing in front of real judges, witnessed by a crowded courtroom.
The students seemed to enjoy the experience, the nervousness of the attorneys, and the interactions between the judges and the attorneys.
“Amazing,” said 1L Jayne Lady, who referred to the hearing as “legal church.”
“A glimpse of what the future holds for us,” commented another IL named Lindsy Rohlf.
Arka Chatterjee, a 1L, said the experience reminded him that law is “a human enterprise” by differentiating what goes on during real trials from routine legal study.
The trial was held on March 6, when the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals visited University of Iowa College of Law. The two cases argued in the Levitt Auditorium were about search and seizure procedures arising from a marijuana possession arrest and an employment discrimination claim.
“Usually people have to travel great distances to see cases like these being heard,” remarked 2L Benton Page, expressing his gratitude.
UI College of Law’s associate dean for student affairs, Linda McGuire, said the court tries to visit every law school in its jurisdiction once every three years. “We do moot arguments here all the time, and advocates wind up doing arguments many times before real judges, but I think the excitement of having real cases that affected real people and watching lawyers who do this for a profession really adds to the excitement for the students,” she explained.
The experience proved to be an eye opener for the students that shattered some of their myths and displayed the realities of the advocacy process.
